The advice being given on building a studio is excellent! As a middle school band director and private teacher I can give you some hints on how to build your studio!
1. Offer to do free sectional for local band directors-especially band directors who promote private lessons!
2. When you teach-get the kids to see a difference in their playing the first day-it's amazing
how excited students get when they can hear the improvement!
3. Be personable!!! If there is a choice of teachers for students-I always choose the teacher who will handle young students in a positive, yet motivating manner! The very best player may not be the best teacher for all students! As a band director-I want my students to be excited about their instruments and their lessons!
4. Help them with their band music and playing tests-it should only take 5-10 minutes of their lesson time but the benefits are immense-for the school program, the student, and for you.
5. Offer help around contest time-that's the best time to get kids engaged in private lessons-some kids will continue and you will begging to build your studio!
6. Be careful not to overwhelm them(especially the younger ones!) You what them to be successful when they come back for their next lesson! Make them feel good about what they are doing!
As a graduate student-I didn't understand why it was difficult to get students! I "get it" now as a band director! I want someone for my students that I trust as a musician and as a person! That person needs to be supportive of the program as well as the student! I also look for longevity-are you leaving in a year-too much change is not best for young students! they seem to need continuity1 I hope this helps! Karen
