The "unpleasantness" is most likely gauged by one's ability to handle
criticism or ability to get on with his/her life after hearing it, I would
say. I don't consider what happened to be unpleasant as I am rather open to
criticism, but I'll willing to bet most people don't find it constructive to
render nit-pick comments for incidental
errors/differences/mistakes/whatever-they-may-be to the effect of "measure
14, beat 4, wrong note" or "2nd page, bar 3, different articulation". If
there are larger issues at play, like playing in the wrong style, lacking
musicality, lacking connection with the audience, balance and projection...
okay... fine - then the performer really has some work to do. But those
other sorts of comments do nothing more than fill up blank space on a page.
Makes you wonder if the judge(s) is/are really absorbing the "performance."
And for something like this questionable Cb in the Debussy, it didn't
exactly detract terribly from the performance, so I don't know why that was
so pertinent for particular judge to make a big hooplah out of it in the
comment sheet when the competition transpired. Anyway... moving right along.
