In the sumner of 83 I had the good fortune to study with Herb Blayman
breifly at Interlochen. His teaching was absolutely first-rate.
His ideas on sound and interpretation was a tremendous boost to my love of
the clarinet...we worked a good deal on Rose and quite alot on Opperman and
articulation concepts...later on Harold Wright would say I sounded great on
these...!! No doubt to Herb's insightful coaching ..!
....on top of that he brought along some of his mouthpiece facings---- and
when I left the summer music school I bought two E110 facings which he
helped me choose. His mouthpieces are dark with a very pleasant round sound
in all registers.
These two mouthpieces are still used and treasured by me..... I remember
him talking a good deal about conductors and many of his anecdotes were
hysterically funny...what I love about his mouthpieces are the warmth in the
chalumeau and their ability to tune and project....it always surprises me
they are not more popular!
I have heard very good things about the recent incarnations of the Blayman
mouthpiece as well.
