Perhaps equally as significant as profit motive or dedication to the
art:

Mozart went through periods of poverty, patrons withheld funds, Mozart
wrote at least a few things on speculation, and so forth. While I've
never read a biography of Mozart, it's easy for me to imagine a
conversation such as:

"Only 30 marks?... to do all of this...? Well, if I do only the notes,
and we depend on performers to recognize what to do with the notes....
after all, musicians are supposed to know that sort of stuff already,
aren't they?.... and perhaps invent a little?"

Can this possibility be ruled out? Perhaps Barenrueter (sp?) wouldn't
do this, but perhaps someone earlier in the chain may have?
