I attended a Masterclass of the Principal Flutist of the NYPO and she
said that Copland himself would tell the Orchestra to play his music
straight and "simplistically". He intended for the complexity to be
what was written in by him and not what the performer added to it in
it's interpretation.

Well, enough said? Well maybe not. Composers` are notorious for almost
wrecking their own interpretations. Was it therefore pretty naff of Mr
Copland for not specifically stipulating what he wanted - even with
subsequent recordings made after Goodman`s? Maybe he did,
and Goodman`s performance pleased My Copland. Lots of music sounds OK
whether it`s swung or not, but I can foresee similar 'botch ups'
happening
in future, almost similar to what we unfortunately do not know about
K622.
There will always be uncertainties re composers` intentions - possibly
in
everything which has been written, but to *specifically* NOT know
whether
Copland`s concerto should be swung or not smacks of unintelligent
research,
and self interest at best, and disgraceful sabotage at the other end.
