at least you got a choice! Not only was it the set piece for my RCM audition
back in december, but now - having got a place, starting in september - I've
got to wheel it out again for their orchestra auditions!! seems like they
can't get enough of it... ;-) fortunately I spent lots of time working on it
with my teachers at York (Lesley Schatzberger and Alan Hacker) for the
auditions and worked through some of the issues - they certainly had some
opinions to bounce off!

-Take a look at Alan Hacker's edition (pub. schott, i think) - it's a bit
different to the barenreiter 'urtext', and offers some interesting solutions
to the lack-of-basset problem

-don't be afraid to formulate your own solutions to the 'basset' passages,
so long as you can justify them if asked;

-a bit of tasteful ornamentation (again, so long as you can justify the
where and what) may help you to stand out from the dozens of other
renditions the panel hear

-spend a disproportionate amount of time on the first note, and the few bars
that follow it. not only is this the hardest part of the piece to play well
(not least under pressure) but it's the first thing they'll hear, and thus
influences the panel's decision to a disproportionate extent, especially if
you play it beautifully...

-IMO, Eric Hoeprich's (sp?) recording with the orchestra of the eighteenth
century (on glossa) is well worth a listen, certainly if you've only ever
heard modern instrument, and particularly 'modern style' performances.

good luck!
