"Amateur" has nothing to do with ligature choice. Until you try what is
available, you won't know what suits you best. I have tried just about
everything out there in the ligature department and I just purchased a
"Bois" ligature (www.boisligatures.com) at ClarinetFest and I like it very
much. It is a simple rubber ring with an "O" ring inside to snug it down
on the mouthpiece. When I first saw it I thought "Oh no, another piece of
junk". But I was pleasantly surprised when I played it. It actually
removes a lot of unwanted vibrations from the sound emitted when playing
(buzzing, etc.) and really helps to focus my tone. It improves projection
too. It was $25. The only drawback is that it currently doesn't come with
a cap, but the manufacturer is working on that now.
