I do grease my mouthpiece cork more than I would if I were using a metal ligature. The only time I
had the string begin to come loose during a performance was in the first or second week that I was
using string. I hadn't learned to tie it tight enough. Since then, I think the only time I've
wished I had a ligature was when I accidentally brushed the sleeve of my suit jacket across the reed
while the clarinet was standing on a peg, breaking the tip of the reed, which I continued to play
until there was a suitable pause. Fortunately, there was no clarinet solo during that time.
