Such a thing could be done very easily, with materials every repair
technician has on hand. Threaded key posts are available without the hinge rod hole
drilled in them. This could serve as the protuberance.

Using the right size drill and a drill press, a hole could be drilled in the
"audience side" of the mouthpiece below the point where the ligature ends.
Almost any tech worth his/her salt would have the proper size drill and
centering device. Once the hole is drilled, it would be threaded with the proper
size tap, and the key post screwed in.

This procedure is exactly the same as any tech would do replacing a damaged
key post.

And NO, I'm NOT going to do it to my best mouthpiece. Not yet, anyway!
