You're right, it is expensive! I use Finale, which you can get from wwbw.com
for about $400. It is very powerful, but isn't without its pains as well. For
example, when extracting parts, I find I often have to manually adjust the
heights of some slurs, positions of dynamic and other textual markings, etc.,
after extracting parts. I don't have much experience with other notation
software, so I can't say whether you'd be trading one set of issues for
another.
