Not all "rights" in America flow directly from your constitution. There
is also international law resulting in, inter alia, the United Nations
conventions which also provide rights. Perhaps at the moment that is a
little academic given the way that the current administration view the
UN.

I would like to think that a country that prides itself (judging from
the way the leadership behave) to be an example to the rest of the world
could actually make more effort over healthcare.

But the trouble with making it a "right" is that it is the nature of
modern medicine to become more and more expensive and there must be some
sort of rationing system in place. I am not thinking about the explosion
of litigation that started a long time in America and is now taking over
in this country - and probably others too.

I think however that those on the left would like to see that rationing
done on clinical criteria, the right on financial. And I for one can't
see a way of reconciling that.

David, I'm with you. It seems to me that the inalienable rights of
life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness certainly must include the right to
health care. The fact remains that we are all paying for the medical
care
of those who cannot afford insurance and their costs are higher than
those
who have health insurance that covers preventative care.
There is something wrong in a society when some look down their
noses at
those who can't afford health insurance and then proceed to justify
their
lack of concern for their brothers by stating that health care is not a
right. I pray that none of these people will ever be in a situation in
which they cannot afford good quality health care. What goes around,
comes
around, as they say. Christy
