Loran--

Whether or not any clarinet comes with one or two barrels is a marketing
decision by the manufacturer (LeBlanc, Buffet, Selmer, etc). You
already know the answer to your second question...the numbers (64, 64,
68, etc) has to do with barrel length and tuning. The shorter the
barrel, the sharper the pitch, conversely, the longer the barrel, the
flatter the pitch. If your tendency is to be sharp, it is better to use
the shorter barrel an pull out as necessary. If your tendency is to be
flat, the longer barrel is the better choice.

Why this manufacturer (I presume Buffet, because 64mm and 65 mm were the
barrel lengths that came with my Bb and A Festivals), selected two
barrel lengths only 1mm apart is a good question (a 64 or 65mm and a 67
or 68mm would have been a better combination). As far as the exterior
diameter of one being "fatter" than the other is of no real consequence,
and may be more of an optical illusion.

Hi, This is probably a silly question but here goes anyway. Why do
some A clarinets come with two barrels and some don't? I have seen one
which comes with two barrels. One is marked 64 the other 65, now I
presume this is to do with size, but exactly what difference does it
make, apart from perhaps for tuning. One also seems 'fatter than the
other.

Curious,
Loran
