No - I was referring to the brand new catalog I got 2 weeks ago from
WWBW which was a summer sale. It had a Yamaha clarinet their bottom of
the line plastic with 2 prices.

Both were $749 (if I recall, somewhere in the 750 range) and there was
NO info to infer that you could call for a lower price.
That's what got my back up - and if somebody ordered it, that's what
they would pay! Of course you could call them and ask them if there is
a "lower price" for it (only if you know to ask!!) and get it for
$350, but you could have to know to ask and there was zero words that
it was discounted.

My point is that somebody seeing that instrument would either infer
that it's a very good instrument because of it's price and think it's
a step up model, or just that it was too expensive when they can buy a
plastic clarinet for $400 anywhere else.

Either way, it's just bad for business. I like the Yamaha line, use
em exclusively for my starting sax students because they are second to
none (to me), but this pricing scheme is just stupid. What parent
wants to see a catalog which a starting sax is listed as "buy this for
only $1800".

Jeez, give me a break...

Here is some hard data, always useful when discussing an issue.

In WW & BW's Spring-Summer 2004 catalog (I don't have anyone else's
recent catalog), it is only *Buffet* --- not Yamaha --- that is shown
with "MAP" prices.

So perhaps the wrong company is being accused of going the MAP route.

David's original post in this thread included:

> So you see the retail price along side of "purchase
> it for only" which is the same high cost.

The words above stimulated my original post because they imply that
the
printed price is the dealer's lowest price and thus is deceptive
advertising.
