Subj: [kl] Reading bassoon parts on bass clarinet
Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2004 10:01:30 -0400

Hi all,

I will be playing bass clarinet for a concert this weekend, with one rehearsal
on Saturday morning, and the director wants me to cover a 3rd bassoon part in
one piece, Charbrier's "Joyeuse Marche." I seemed to remember there was a trick
to reading bass clef C instrument parts on bass clarinet, so I searched the
archives and found a post about the "read as tenor clef and add three sharps to
the key signature" method. But someone off-list told me that this only works
for Eb instruments.

So, is there something that will work for transposing to a Bb instrument? (And
yes, I know this is a wonderful example of why I need to learn to read bass
clef, and I *am* getting better at it. Just not good enough yet to transpose
bass clef parts at sight.)

Some of this part is in alto clef, and I just read those notes as written,
right?

Thanks!
Donna
