It seems to me that the place to strike --- the 'soft underbelly' --- is
the retail store rather than the manufacturer. The only thing that
First Act has going for it is ridiculously low prices, and they can't
survive if they spend more money on forged keys, etc. So you have no
hope (imo) of convincing them to change the instrument. WalMart, on
the other hand, can choose what to sell or not to sell, and they can be
influenced by public opinion, such as reports from kids at school that
the teacher warned them away from WalMart's instruments etc

It's always an uphill battle when a sufficient number of customers
continue to plunk their money down, and therefore merchants continue to
offer cheap products so long as lawsuits (which cost them money) don't
result and the government doesn't prosecute for health, safety or fraud
violations.

But I think that your chances of convincing First Act are just about
zero that they should compete directly with $400 student instruments by
Yamaha, Buffet, Selmer, etc. They go after the $150 market, and for
$150 you can't forge keys.

What does the song say....? "With one meat ball, you don't get no
bread!"
