Well, the Conn/Selmer thing I knew about because I got mail from them
(why?) pushing that new 1904 anniversary clarinet that probably costs more
than I make in a year. At least Steinway is known for its pianos (putting
it mildly). Whether it can manage a couple woodwind and brass shops and
allow them to preserve their identities...another story. At least they
were not acquired by WalMart, Enron, or Martha Stewart Omnimedia while that
disgraced former Series 7/63 broker gets what she deserves. A Vito Dazzler
is ghastly enough--a plaid or quilt-patterned Selmer Signature might be a
bit much.

As I understand it, the Steinway/Selmer deal was essentially a merger of
equals. The Steinway name was chosen for the corporate identity because it
had better name recognition and a more positive image. Then they acquired
UMI and the Selmer Division became Conn-Selmer. I wonder what they will
call it now??? Maybe the "Everything But Yamaha" Division? Also keep in
mind that Selmer PARIS is an entirely separate company. The US company is
merely the official US IMPORTER of those instruments.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
