So far as I know, the danger is gumming up the interior of your
instrument or the tones holes. Or in the worst case scenario, leaking
onto/into the pads.

Thus Vaseline, which is a paste, would leave 'lumps' inside the bore
that would alter the air column --- just as pulling out can perturb the
air column. By contrast, bore oil would just leave a thin film that
diverts water by differences in surface tension, etc. --- without
changing the bore's shape.

Gunk and clarinets are enemies, of course; and that's why I prefaced my
comment with "It seems like too much of a hassle to me". I should've
added "...and too likely to make a major mess."

You haven't said *which* pad(s) & holes suffer the most. Sometimes you
can redirect water by holding the instrument in an appropriate position
while you're not actually playing, and et gravity do the work for you.
