Subj: [kl] mail order instrument purchases

Because there were none around the Boston area that I could find, I
recently bought my new Buffet 1193 bass through the mail from Muncy Winds.
I'm quite pleased with the instrument and the experience. The people at
Muncy were very understanding about charging my debit card over two days to
work with the daily limits. They offered to charge me for one and send
three for trial, since they had that many. I asked for two. They arrived
promptly. One was slightly damaged in the left-hand little finger keywork,
but that one ended up being the keeper, after a little pliers work. The
Buffet case has that keywork right at the edge of the case. That's OK for
me carrying it, but not UPS. Later I got a Wiseman type A bass case. Muncy
took back the other horn, which I had meticulously cleaned and packed as if
for war, without a restocking fee. Bravo.

My only connection to Muncy is as a customer. I also buy some reeds and
other tidbits from them, and also WWBW from time to time. I think it is sad
that the state of the business doesn not allow for well-stocked local
stores, but that's the way it is. My trips to NYC have shown that it can be
hard to find instruments even there.

Rayburns in Boston *did* have an excellent used low-Eb Selmer at one time,
redone by Emilio. It played wonderfully, but was gone by the time I
gathered the money. Also, in this area, Northeast Woodwinds in Lynnfield
has instruments in stock, including, as it turns out, an 1193.
