Kal Opperman made a couple of experimental barrels out of soft pine. He
told me that they played wonderfully, but that the wood soaked up water
and swelled within about 10 minutes, so they were unusable.

He has also made barrels out of ceramic. Richard Stoltzman used one for
a while, but went back to wood. I tried one and thought it responded
very well, but I didn't like the sound. For what it's worth, my Bb
barrel is made of cocus, and I have a boxwood barrel that I use when I
want a less energetic sound.

I think that Benade wrote that bore smoothness made little difference
<http://test.woodwind.org/Databases/Klarinet/2003/02/000696.txt>, but
Alvin Swiney (who worked with Moennig) has written that the best Moennig
barrels and bells were made of relatively non-dense grenadilla, with
significant grain showing. (On the other hand, he wrote that Buffet
bores used to be sealed with shellac and quite shiny
<http://test.woodwind.org/Databases/Klarinet/1999/05/001180.txt>, and
that Moennig made rubber-lined barrels for Gigliotti.)

Best regards.
