Subj: [kl] K&M bass stand okay for contra-alto?
Date: Thu, 22 Jul 2004 21:38:09 -0400

At the ClarinetFest, I'm considering buying a K&M collapsible bass clarinet
/ bassoon stand for my contra-alto clarinet. Several companies sell this
stand. Several, including some that don't sell it, are using it to support
bass clarinets for sale at the Fest, but I haven't been able to observe
whether this stand seems stable enough with something as tall as a contra.
The stand is a bit lighter weight than I expected, and the tripod stands
higher than it looks in the catalogue pictures. (More squat and spread-out
would have been more stable.) WW&BW specifies in its online catalog that
this stand can be used for contra clarinets. Have any of you used it with
a contra? Is it tippy (top-heavy) with a contra on it? There seem to be
two different models, one slightly heavier than the other. My other option
would be to modify a baritone sax stand. It's fairly easy to modify a
tenor sax stand for alto clarinet, by adding another hole with brackets for
a homemade padded cup for the bell at the bottom, and I'm wondering if a
similarly modified baritone sax stand (available in greater variety) might
give me sturdier support for the contra.

Enjoying the Fest a lot, btw, despite the commute and the logistics of
moving between venues that are far apart on this sprawling campus. More
later.
