What is the purpose of requiring a reed instrument to fake
it?

I offered to the composer (via the conductor) to play a didgeridoo
instead (or a length of PVC pipe cut to the right length with bee's wax
on the "mouthpiece"), but the message I got was that getting an actually
didgeridoo to play would be "cheap"; and I can understand (sort of) what
he means. The low F# played on the Bass clarinet is actually quite
effective - but I fear the composer has an effect in mind which is more
virtuosic than just playing the note and changing embouchure as is
suggested in the part.
