Subj: [kl] ClarinetFest Update
Date: Thu, 22 Jul 2004 11:38:45 -0400

We survived the first day of the ClarinetFest in good style. The morning
opened with a lively (read: loud) performance by the David Krakauer's group
"Klezmer Madness". Such energy! This was followed by a session with D. C.
military clarinetists, with some nice playing by the Navy Band Quartet.
They finished their performance with three movements of Astor Piazolla's
"Histoire du Tango". SFC Julia Mahan's Eb playing was especially good.
French clarinetist Dominique Vidal finished the morning program with some
lovely (chirpy reed notwithstanding) Widor, Francaix and Gounod,

I took the afternoon off to catch up on sleep and practicing, so someone
else will have to fill the group in. The Tuesday evening performance by the
USAF Band Airmen of Note was a real treat. The featured artist was Paquito
d'Rivera, who, along with Israeli pianist Alon Yavnai, showed what
consummate artists are like. Piquet plays with a gorgeous sound and
complete control of the clarinet, no matter what style. He also is a real
gentleman, with a great sense of humor. Several people at the reception
following were heard to say that they just might burn their clarinets!

More later.... need to practice.
