Just came back from a concert at Ravinia (summer home of Chicago Symphony
and concert venue). I heard the New York Phil play an astounding program.
Mendelssohn "Fingal's Cave" Debussy "Nocturnes," Mendelssohn Violin Concerto,
Strauss "Zarathustra".
Even with the usual outdoor concert distractions this was a concert to
remember. I was especially impressed with the superb intonation, even in 84 degree
heat and 99% humidity.
The clarinet playing was exemplary. I want to single out Mark Nuccio's Eb
clarinet playing on the Strauss - I can't imagine better playing.
I am not often or easily impressed. This concert knocked me out. Met John
Bruce Yeh and Lawrie Bloom backstage after the concert. They were as knocked
out as I was.
Damn it's great to hear really superb playing.
