Speaking of the influence of materials on sound, can anyone explain to me
why the sound I can produce with the cork pads I have on the upper joint of
both my R-13 and my eefer are so much better than the sound I get with
ordinary pads? This week, I played that Noblet 45 eefer with factory
installed pads for the band director who asked me to try it out and then I
played a few things for him (and a few spectators) on my own Buffet Evette
with the cork pads. I used the same mouthpiece and reed on both instruments
and not one person listening preferred the sound of that Leblanc clarinet.
It was quite obvious that the tone on the Buffet was clearer, and of better
quality than the other clarinet. The intonation of both instruments was
about equal without any adjustments in pitch made by me with embouchure or
fingering adjustments. It is possible the Noblet's pads were dried out and
perhaps a bit leaky but even so, I'm not sure it would have mattered all
that much-or would it? I suppose there is no telling how long that
instrument sat in the store before anyone asked to purchase one. So, is it
really the cork pads or something else that has an influence on the sound of
the clarinets? Christy

Christy,

Why do you assume that the pads alone are the source of the "difference"?
There are a LOT of differences between an R13 and a Noblet.
