Dear "klarinet" list,
This past Sunday (July 18) I was at a "salon" performance by Tania
Leon's new Son Sonora ensemble that was part of the National Black Arts
Festival here in Atlanta. It was one of several performanaces by Son
Sonora in the festival.
Of special interest to this list is that Ted Gurch (assistant
principal clarinet for Atlanta Symphony and clarinetist for new music
ensemble Thamyris) performed Anthony Davis' "Parenthetically" for
clarinet solo. At least, it is simply listed "clarinet solo" on G.
Schirmer's website ( http://www.schirmer.com/composers/davis_works.html
), but in this instance Ted performed it on bass clarinet.
Ted played from memory, and I don't know if it was intended for "any"
of the clarinet family or specifically for bass clarinet, and I didn;t
think to ask. Obviously it is playable across the family, but it
strikes me that the character of the bass clarinet really gives the
7-minute piece opportunity to "grind" and "speak" (timbre and
inflection) the music's funky style.
G. Schirmer's website lists "Parenthetically" as "not currently
available" in the list of Davis' works, and no mention of it is on Hal
Leonard's website. So I suspect Ted got the music from the composer
some time ago. (Heck, it may have been written for him, for all I know
-- I'll call Ted and ask.)
But performing it on bass clarinet is right on. I recommend it. But
since it's supposedly "not currently available" I'll have to find out
more and report on what it would take for G. Schirmer to make it available.
Has anyone on this list performed it?
