Subj: [kl] Hand made reeds

Guys:

I have just begun to make reed from the cane. The whole reason is that
I understand that a hand made reed is far superior to a machine made
reed.

I have heard that reeds made with sand paper dulls the tone and those
made with a plane have a much better tonal quality.

I split the cane and use a plane, a rat-tail file, a reed knife,
sandpaper and reed rush. The question is: I do some shaping with my
rat-tail file. Does this dull the tone?

I usually finish the reeds with the reed knife, sand paper and reed
rush. Does this dull the tone?

Also, I understand the center of the heart of the reed is where the
tone is created or destroyed . Is this correct? And if so, what are
some guidelines for shaping the heart of the reed.

If anyone can give me advise on how to make a good sounding reed, I
would really appreciate it
