HaHa! Good question. I would say, yes and no; or that one can influence the
other.
Example from my own experience. When I make a barrel out of Delrin (and leave
the bore untreated), I often make a product that helps the clarinet produce a
tone with more projection and less "fuzziness". The response is excellent -
the tone just POPS out!
Such a barrel is excellent for jazz playing, producing a louder and brighter
sound.
However, I find the character just a little lacking for classical - not
enough depth or complexity - the sort of tone we associated with fine hard rubber
and wood products.
Using various techniques, I actually "stress" the inner surface of the Delrin
barrel. When I do, I find the tone more pleasing, and more in line with what
I would expect from a fine wood barrel.
In doing so, I find I loose some of the quick response mentioned earlier.
So, yes and no!
