Actually, I don't find that putting in plastic rings affects the sound quality
particularly. I used to have a brass set that came from a shop in Florence,

I have several sets of tuning rings that I bought a year or so ago. They're
are made of nylon, and are quite useless. The inner circumference is ragged.
The roughness of the surface makes enough turbulence in the air stream that the
tone does deteriorate. Anything I do to try to smooth them seems to make the
surfaces worse.

You might want to see if your plastic rings have rough edges and surfaces. If
so, you might be able to smooth them out with sandpaper or steel wool.

I had some of the brass ones like Tony described. They got lost way to
easily, as they would drop out of the barrel quickly when I was disassembling my
clarinet. The nasty little buggers would then take shelter under the risers or
other hard-to-get-to places.

Currently shopping for a new source for tuning rings.

Hey...maybe I could make myself some! Duh!
