Dan, I work with this stuff all day long. I work with rubber mouthpieces, I
work with glass mouthpieces, I work with wood mouthpieces. I work with barrels
made of different materials, different woods, synthetics, etc. I'm surrounded
by the stuff, sometimes 16 hours a day.

I am constantly experimenting, both with materials and the quality and shape
of surfaces to eke out the last drop of tone and response - To give my
customers the very slight edge they are looking for.

To come up with solutions to real world performance problems.

My customers are not stupid, nor are they influenced by "glitz" or my need to
make more expensive (therefore profitable) products. They are driven by a
desire to sound better, to get improved response, to fix tuning problems, to
match tone and response over different registers.

I am driven by a desire to help them.

Many people seek new materials because they are not getting what they want
from their clarinet.

Should we just stop all experimentation just because you flatly maintain
materials make no difference? I think not.

Walter
