If what you say is true, and I have no reason to doubt it, then
the entire question of materials affecting sound character is an
even greater conundrem than ever. It allows any maker to assert
that "our design produces the finest sound" (whatever that means)
and who is to challenge it?
While I think your point a very valid one, the argument has
always been that the sound character of a clarinet was dependent
on the medium. There never was an addendum to that questionable
statement assigning some other part of the character of the
clarinet to the instrument's design. One could even argue that
the character is related to quality of manufacture.
Finally this. No one has made any assertions about the most
important part of any particular person's sound character, namely
the characteristics of their body; i.e., lung capacity, cavities,
head shape, etc.
And what this all says is that the whole question of the sound
character of a clarinet is anomolous!!

I think the idea of the experiment it to make the instruments as
much alike
as possible. Otherwise you are testing the design of the
instrument rather
than the material.
