When I was in music school studying the clarinet (way back in the last
century), I had a clarinet professor try a little experiment with us. I
argued that I could tell the difference between an wooden clarinet and one
made of a different material.

With the same mouthpiece, reed set up, the professor went behind closed
doors and played the same passage on 3 different clarinets all in good
working condition. One was a buffett top of the line, one was a plastic
Bundy and one was, believe it or not, a metal marching band clarinet from
years ago. He claimed that we would not be able to tell the difference.

I must admit, that the differences among the 3 were subtle. Some of the
students could not distinguish among the them. I could but barely.

My point is this: The mouthpiece set up and of course the player's
embouchure and technique are the most important aspect of producing a good
sound.
