Sorry, just to correct this: the "force" exerted downward on your thumb
remains the same. The *torque* exerted about the base of your thumb
increases linearly (not exponentially) with the distance between the point of
contact and the base of your thumb -- so "bringing it in even by a small
amount will reduce it dramatically."

On another tack: though of course I'm very happy that people find solutions
of whatever sort to their physical problems, I do find it surprising, having
suffered a little myself in the past, that expensive pieces of equipment are
necessary for others when a piece of knicker elastic sufficed for me.

(A case of a demand created?-)
