I fear that it's time for me to ask some questions whose answers I ought
to know, but I don't:

I'm looking at a reproduction of an 1886 score of Handel's "Music For
The Royal Fireworks". The first two parts are labelled "Tromba I. 3
per parte" and "Tromba II. 3 per parte" --- which is clear enough: 3
trumpets per part.

The third part uses the now-obsolete (so says my dictionary) soprano C
clef, wherein middle-C is on the staff's bottom line. This part is
labelled "Principal. 3 per parte" without mentioning a specific
instrument. What does this mean?

Thank you
