...well, clearly it's not an open-and-shut case.

I'm a bit reassured to hear that Dr. McClune, who is certainly not a
beginner, gets a sharp-ish concert C from his mouthpiece --- which is
where I was before this discussion about mouthpiece pitch began.

It it makes any difference, it *is* timbre that I'm interested in, not
intonation --- the idea being that the instrument itself drags you
towards a certain intonation, and controlling the mouthpiece pitch
(within reasonable limits) adds or subtracts overtones even though the
fundamental that defines 'intonation' doesn't move too much.
