With proper acoustic playing there is absolutely NO NEED to amplify wind instruments!!!

I own a music store---and sad to say it is largely music stores that promulgated that myth that you need junk to be heard in the early 70's doing "ANYTHING FOR A BUCK!!!!!" just to sell "stuff".

I've played in many a 3-8 piece band that learned quite quickly to SHUT THE STUPID THINGS OFF!!

One note from my "KURT HEISIG THE BIGGEST SOUND JAZZ SAX MOUTHPIECE" and they are reaching for
the knobs FAST to shut the ________thing off!!!

"I TOLD you so!!!" You would think that if you tell someone something that they would take your WORD at face value!!!

It doesn't matter what instrument I play---soprano, alto, tenor, baritone sax, clarinet---right on out over an amplified band!!!! With proper mouthpieces, reeds, ligs, overhauls and playing, and an understanding of tongue level---who needs that JUNK!!!!!! (Yes if I worked more on my flute---that too!)

I always tell them "I worked YEARS to get my sound and you have NO RIGHT to mess it up with your toys!"

If they don't shut it off---I play ONE NOTE in the mic---and it goes off NOW!!!!

I can fill almost ANY hall playing the mellowist sub-tones. Big halls!!!!! (and so can any of YOU)

So what about the misery of "Live" music tooo distorted and loud to hear?

Complain to the manager!!!

Tell them that they are in violation of OSHA! (over a certain DB they ARE!).

I have tipped a guitar player playing in a closet at Lover's of Jesus Point in Pacific Grove to play WITHOUT his amp
so I could talk with my guest!

Inform the club owner that you are going elsewhere---you REALLY LOVE the music, but you are dis-inclined to go through all the hassle of sueing him so you are going away. They are under the impression that their customers want it loud. What they don't realise is that a lot of customers --ME---are NOT coming to their clubs because we value our hearing.

Another thing to remember is that hearing loss from such stupidity is a VERY REAL problem.

So folks---COMPLAIN ---LOUDLY---let your COMPLAINTS be louder than the amplifiers. Anyone out there ---besides Methusela Leeson old enough to remember live music in the '50's?? My father was a professional musician and at 2 years old I remember bands NOT amplified filling OUTDOOR venues with NO PROBLEM at all!!

Speaking of Herr Leeson---he used to wail away on his bass clarinet in our Hastings Band in Santa Cruz outdoors at the Beach Boardwalk and be heard JUST FINE ----ACOUSTICALLY ---so if it can be done on bass clarinet......

At every jazz concert that I have attended (my husband is a fan), even the
small groups are so loud when mic'd that even though we sit in the back, we
still have to wear earplugs to cut the volume down to a bearable level.
