Part of a metroome's value is that it asks you to play at a tempo that
comes from outside yourself.

I find it useful to begin by finding my own "most comfortable tempo"
with the metronome turned off. Next, I match the metronome to the
tempo that I have selected. Finally, I change the metronome a small
amount --- such that now I must force myself to play at a tempo that
comes from outside myself. That is, I must follow my 'accompanist'
rather than following myself.

I presume you're also aware of "Music Minus One" type CDs which, once
again, give you someone else to keep time with, rather than playing at
your own tempo.... which may not be as uniform as you feel that it is.
