A quarter of a century ago, I played at Oregon State University under
James Douglass, who in turned played under Revelli. Douglass told many
stories about Revelli that seem to corroborate this thread.

Douglass certainly seemed to try to emulate Revelli's style. During my
first few years, he clearly practiced the "perfection through
intimidation" school of band directing. He was a typical "type A", with
lots of yelling, exasperation, and barely stifled anger, always on the
verge of a blown gasket.

During my junior year, he was diagnosed with some heart trouble, and his
doctor told him if he didn't back it down, he'd be checking out early.
The change was quite dramatic, in my view. He was still intense, but
with an overtone of friendly assistance rather than intimidation. Mr.
Douglass had a profound impact on me (a sentiment I was pleased to be
able to share with him upon his retirement a few years ago), and I
remember my final two years very fondly.
