Subj: [kl] For Ginger: clarinetto in La

Ginger, if someday the manuscript of the Mozart concerto is ever
found, I can tell you with absolute certainty, that the instrment
name will not read "Clarinetto in La." It will read "Clarinetto
in A."

There is not a single case of a Mozart work for which the
manuscript exists, either solo, operatic, symphonic, etc. that
speaks of clarinets on than in "A" or "B" (meaning B-flat of
course), or "C." He never used the solfeggio names when
specifying an instrument's pitch.

As for Moorhead's obsession that the Mozart concerto be played on
an A clarinet, why should this surprise you? When the work is
played on any other kind of clarinet, the key signature of the
work is compromised and whatever character the A clarinet brings
to the work is altered. I think Moorhead is absolutely right. And
to show you how dangerous a contrary view can be, there was an
audition at the SF symphony about 10-15 years ago and a nice
young player (and a sensationsal clarinet player too) was
auditioning. He played very nicely until the conductor asked him
for a few measures of the slow movement of K. 622. He played it
beautifully on a B-flat clarinet because that is what he had with
him. Later, the conductor made a comment about being absolutely
unwilling to hire a clarinetist who would play 622 on a B-flat
clarinet.

There are strong feelings involved.

I'm wondering what college C.C.'s auditioning for... Care to
enlighten us?
Some of us might know exactly what pieces are that professor's
favorite.. In
my case- Brian Moorhead at the University of South Florida is
completely
obsessed with Mozart's clarinet concerto, particularly played on
A clarinet-
or as he lovingly refers to it "in La". ..... Needless to say, I
do not
enjoy the Mozart concerto anymore.
