Personally, I could never play in any band that had 90 or more
players. I was simply deafened by it and I could not hear other
voices clearly. In my salad days I once played in Bethlehem, PA
with a massed band group. I was one of 4 E-flat clarinet players
and it was torture. I never did it again.
Actually, in Revelli's bands, the individual voices and textures could always
be heard. He gave very clear instruction in what was important and what
wasn't. Woe to the player who was covering up the second flute obbligato!

Some of the softest playing I ever did was in the University of Michigan
Band. Although it bothered me at the time (I was after the BIG clarinet sound) it
taught me control and discipline. It made me a much better ensemble player.
