Once after hearing Sinatra start a new phrase without a break- after a
previously long one - I asked some studio musician friends who had
worked on his sessions, and several said that he would wrap his arms
over his chest, and squeeze extra breath support at those times. Camera
men were careful to crop that out of their viewfinders. When he sang one
of those elongated phrases, it certainly took my breath away.
