As I understood it, early English Horns, because of their extreme length,
had to be bent in the middle so the player could reach the lower
notes. Thus, the instrument was angled, or "angle" (with accent over the
"e"). Since that word in French is pronounced the same as "Anglais" the
transition from "cor angle" to "cor Anglais" and translation to "ENGLISH
horn" followed naturally.
