I had already apologized to Robert off-list by the time that I received
your post, Karl. I *did* get carried away with my language. This
doesn't change my feelings about the topic, but I do apologize for my
lofty 'demand'.

I still maintain that if you're writing music that is aimed at
encouraging a beginner to appreciate and explore his (or her)
instrument, and if it's not going to be a step-by-step method book, then
you need to know enough about the fingerings to steer the customer away
from pitfalls. An example I used off-list with Robert was trills. It
seems to me that if he wants to include a trill or two, and since some
of them are nasty whereas others aren't, a book such as "303 Fingerings"
contains information that Robert will need.
