This is just an observation: I've given away most of the mouthpieces
that I didn't like, but the three that I still own (two of which I don't
enjoy, but I've kept them anyway) all measure 14.84-14.87 at their end
openings.

I notice that my mouthpieces, being made of hard rubber, have remained
circular at their ends whereas my wood barrel has not.

Since I had my least favorite mouthpieces out of the drawer to measure
them, your comment motivated me to put one of them (5RV) on one of my
barrel 'failures' that I haven't trashed yet. The combination did, in
fact, behave more extremely out-of-tune compared to when I test the
'failed' barrel with my favorite mouthpiece. This was good
reinforcement for the basic concept that barrel and mouthpiece interact.
