Unless the music explicitly calls for it, I prefer to think the moaning
& groaning is optional, myself.

Approaching from above to begin with would definitely do away with that
little "grunt" that seems to come into play for so many beginners.

Additionally I think this is where so many clarinet players first find
way too much tension in playing, and it rather mushrooms from here. By
the time the third register enters into the bargain, most folks are so
tense, it is a wonder they enjoy playing at all.

I like the idea of calling this a "register change" rather than a break,
and also like to compare it to different "voice parts". I'm not sure
this is as valid, perhaps, but for me personally, I've always found the
clarinet to be much like a human voice, it's character changing very
subtly, yet in some ways retaining certain characteristics along all the
registers.
