Georg, this is also called 'Horsetail plant" in English. It is any species
of the Genus "Equisetum". It probably grows worldwide, and any species
probably could be made to work as an abrasive. It's a so-called primitive plant,
sort of like ferns and moss are called primitive. The stems are small tubes, and
there is some sort of silicaceous material in the covering that makes it
great for reed use.
