Steve,
We regularly rebuild any R13 from about 148xxx on. Earlier than that I do like to evaluate each instrument individually to see how serious the wear is. (The Selmer 9, 9*, 10 and the 10G-- also rebuild quite nicely)
In ANY period factory "rush" is obvious in many clarinets. Remember factories have to turn out so many in a period of time. Those of us that do fine clarinet repairs have a different agenda---making YOU happy!
Factory clarinets often have flaws---wood chips, tool chatter, dried slurry of wood debris, less than perfect tone hole surfaces, etc. Used ones may well have all of the above plus old case fuzz layered in with last years breakfast!
New or used we usually suggest a full overhaul. I recently got two R13's in for students. Both were very fine clarinets but after stripping them and cleaning up the interior and exterior of the tone holes and better pads, they are remarkably better instruments.
First step is to evaluate your old ones. Remember that new ones also play REMARKABLY better if completely re-done correctly.

Subject: [kl] Repair or buy new?
I have two older Buffet R13s (Bb) that I play regularly.
The older is a 937xx, and the newer is 1037xx, which
I prefer. I have no strong objections to either instrument,
but they need some serious work done on them after
many years.
My question: given the age and design specs of these
instruments, in your opinion should I have one or the
other put in top shape, or consider buying a new Buffet
Bb?
What improvements might I likely expect with a new R13?
Should/Must I consider the more expensive, newer models
in the Buffet line?
If I buy an another Bb, I'll sell one of my current R13s.
Thanks,
Steve
