There are a lot of cases where the "disastrous fingering" has to do
with the key you are playing in....if we know our scales and are
conscious (as we should be) of the key signature, then these fingerings
just become automatic.

In other cases there are going to be accidentals and weird fingering
patterns,
sometimes sliding from one key to the other or even in some cases
dropping down from one key to the other, and I suppose that depends on how
proficient the player is. I would guess that many of us would work these out
and play them through at least once or twice ahead of time, and after we are
familiar with the piece will know it's coming and be ready for it.
