Of course, the manufacturing process for double reeds is INFINITELY more
complex than that for single reeds, being mostly hand work rather than
machine mass production. Adding to the cost is that the demand is much
lower, as there are far fewer double reed players than single reed players
in the world, thus losing the economy of scale advantage of single reed
manufacturing. Because of that, making their own reeds is more
economically sensible for the double reed folks.
