Dear List:

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of the great jazz
player/soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy. Steve died this morning after =
almost
a 2 year battle with cancer. He was hospitalized last week, slipped =
into a
coma on Wednesday and died this morning here in Boston. =20

Steve was a luminary, the type of person that you can't help learning =
from.
We were all so thrilled when he decided to move to Boston and teach at =
the
New England Conservatory after 30+ years in Europe. We will miss him =
and
his wonderful playing immensely. =20

A short bio:
One of the most important of the 1960s jazz experimentalists, Steve Lacy =
was
first inspired to play clarinet and soprano saxophone by the great New
Orleans master Sidney Bechet. His open-minded approach allows him to =
work in
almost any jazz setting. Born in 1934, he has worked with artists =
ranging
from the Swing Era legends Jo Jones and Buck Clayton to jazz
experimentalists like Cecil Taylor, Abbey Lincoln, and Roswell Rudd. =
Lacy
grew disenchanted with the jazz scene in New York moved to Paris in =
1970,
where he has solidified his stature as a major soprano saxophone =
innovator,
and as one of the most creative musicians in jazz.
