Gillian,
Try this:-
With the whole clarinet assembled, from D (4th line) relax jaw and lips to
the extent that you bend the note down a semitone (or even a tone). In this
relaxed (totally wrong) jaw position start to slide fingers off one by one -
keep the relaxed jaw and lips, and slide all the way up to C. When (a flat)
C is reached, begin to bring lip and jaw back to normal for a normal C to
sound. Hey presto?
